I left my Ph.D. program in sociology at the University of Notre Dame in 2017 without finishing my Doctorate. Today I am working as a data scientist at a tech company - in retrospect, a career much better suited for me personally. I want to use this post as an opportunity to share my thoughts on how my transition went and give a glimpse into a more unusual path into a tech career.

Introduction 🔗I have no formal training in computer science and would not consider myself an engineer. I do, however, think of myself as someone who “gets the job done”. As I have worked in several startups (each subsequent company tends to get smaller 👀), I’ve picked up a scrappy mindset where I love learning new things.
